Welcome to Nguni Restore
Restoring Our Farm to Its Natural Beauty,
One Indigenous Tree at a Time
Nguni Restore is our dedicated ecological restoration initiative. We are committed to helping nature heal itself through locally assisted rejuvenation. Our approach focuses on using locally grown plant material and creating green opportunities that support sustainable jobs and foster eco-entrepreneurship within our community.
Nguni Restore
We have planted 150,000 indigenous trees and plants endemic to the Albany Thicket biome during the 2022/2023 season. These plants are ethically grown in our nursery on the farm, ensuring their suitability for the local environment. The planting was is done by a paid workforce from the local community, providing employment and skills development. In the 2024/2025 planting season, we are planting an 150,000 trees more, aiming for a total of 300,000 trees.
About the Nguni Restoration Project
The Nguni Restoration Project is an ecological restoration initiative located on our 162-hectare farm, just 12 km outside of Makhanda in the Eastern Cape. As one of the very few large-scale ecological restoration projects in South Africa that is entirely owned and operated by indigenous people, this project is a groundbreaking effort in the region.
The land has been degraded by decades of mining, is now a under environmental restoration. This farm is privately owned and is under ownership of indigenous people for the first time in over 200 years.
