Welcome to Nguni Restore

Restoring Our Farm to Its Natural Beauty,
One Indigenous Tree at a Time

Nguni Restore is our dedicated ecological restoration initiative. We are committed to helping nature heal itself through locally assisted rejuvenation. Our approach focuses on using locally grown plant material and creating green opportunities that support sustainable jobs and foster eco-entrepreneurship within our community.

Nguni Restore

Nguni Restore leads the project, having planted 150,000 indigenous trees and plants endemic to the Albany Thicket biome during the 2022/2023 season. These plants are ethically grown in our nursery on the farm, ensuring their suitability for the local environment. The planting was carried out by a paid workforce from the local community, providing vital employment and skills development. In the 2024/2025 planting season, we are planting an additional 150,000 trees, aiming for a total of 300,000 trees, all funded by One Tree Planted.

About the Nguni Restoration Project

The Nguni Restoration Project is a significant ecological restoration initiative located on our 162-hectare farm, just 12 km outside of Makhanda in the Eastern Cape. As one of the very few large-scale ecological restoration projects in South Africa that is entirely owned and operated by indigenous people, this project is a groundbreaking effort in the region. The land, once degraded by decades of mining, is now a beacon of environmental restoration not only in Makhanda but across the Eastern Cape and South Africa. This farm has returned to indigenous ownership for the first time in over 200 years.

Key Objectives:

  • Reforestation: Planting 300,000 indigenous trees and plants across 75 hectares to restore local ecosystems and expand forest cover from 8 to 75 hectares.

  • Community Empowerment: Creating green job opportunities, providing training in sustainable land management, and supporting local eco-entrepreneurs.

  • Biodiversity Revival: Enhancing species diversity and promoting essential ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration and water purification.

  • Sustainable Development: Transforming the land into a hub for organic agriculture, eco-tourism, and pro-poor economic development.
